This year, Sports College SA students travelled to Victor Harbour for year 11 and 12 conjoined camp. I had the pleasure of being in the first cluster where all the Northern classes joined together to create a two-day long camp.
Our class left school on our bus at 9.30am on the Tuesday and arrived at 12pm. The weather on arrival was perfect with the camp date being set just a couple weeks after the end of summer.
Soon after our arrival, we were directed to our assigned cabins where we would spend time relaxing and getting to know students within our cluster during break periods and before bed. An hour later we were split into 2 groups that were determined based on our year level. The first group was the year 11s and the second was my group, the year 12s. We then split up and made our way to the buses before being transferred to Middleton Beach to engage in surfing lessons provided by a local surfing organisation. Since the year 11s were the first group to surf, we year 12s had the opportunity to enjoy some free time playing free choice games, cricket and relaxing on the beach. After the year 11s surfing session, we year 12s began our lesson while the year 11s had their opportunity to relax and play games on the beach.
At 5pm we were then transferred back to the campsite where we were given time to shower and prepare for dinner. An our later we gathered in the main area where we enjoyed a make your own Mexican bowl meal with a wide selection of ingredients.
Not long after, we travelled back to our cabins to prepare for our much-anticipated quiz night. Groups of 6-8 from every class dressed up in free-choice themed outfits and competed for bragging rights. The question ranged from sports to music to general knowledge.
To finish up the quiz night and to determine the winner, every group came up with a joke that was tested by the noise detector. The group with the loudest noise made after their joke won and received a large amount of points towards their group. Although we did extra points for our phenomenal bee joke, our group, the surfer boys, just missed out on top place.
After the quiz night wrapped up, we got ready for bed and made our way into our cabins werewe spent time getting to know fellow students and bonding.
In the morning, we woke up and travelled to the main eating area where we enjoyed toast, cereal and a selection of drinks. Soon after, we packed up our cabins and got ready for the day.
To finish up the enjoyable trip, we engaged in two final activities which were team challenges which consisted of physical and mental tests. During these activities, myself and couple other students were able to take part in capturing our final camp moments by using the school media team’s professional cameras. We were able to take many photos of fun moments throughout the challenges and funny photos of friends.
At midday, we packed our things onto our buses and travelled back to the main area to enjoy bread rolls with a range of fillings which we then enjoyed on our trip back to our campuses.
Overall, the camp was an unforgettable experience that allowed us to connect with classmates, challenge ourselves with fun activities, and create long-lasting memories. The mix of adventure in a new area, teamwork, and relaxation time made for the perfect balance. It was great to see everyone come together, whether it was during the surf lessons, quiz night, or team challenges. As we returned to school at 2.30pm and said our final goodbyes, we left with new friendships within the cluster and a stronger sense of community within our class which will further assist in our overall culture throughout the year.
