At Sports College SA, we love seeing the many different pathways our students pursue after graduation. For Jasmin Luscott, a member of the Class of 2021, that pathway has combined her passion for education with her lifelong love of netball.
Today, Jasmin is studying a Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) at Flinders University while working as a Development Officer with Netball SA. Alongside her studies and career, she continues to play and coach netball, remaining deeply connected to the sport that has played such an important role in her life.
Since graduating from SCSA, Jasmin has focused on balancing university, work and sport. While juggling multiple commitments has come with its challenges, it has also helped her develop valuable skills that she knows will benefit her future career.
“Being able to balance studying and working has allowed me to develop high-level communication and mentorship skills, which will help me once I have finished my teaching degree,” she says.
Reflecting on her time at SCSA, Jasmin believes the College played a significant role in shaping the person she is today. Joining midway through Year 10 proved to be a turning point, giving her the support and confidence she needed to thrive.
“SCSA helped shape where I am today in many ways,” she says. “It helped shape my independence in my learning, which allowed me to feel more at ease with the jump into university. I often say that if I hadn’t made the jump to attend SCSA, I don’t think I would be where I am today, let alone have finished school.”
“With the amazing support of my teachers and mentors, they helped me see the positive side of attending school and made me want to come to school.”
One of Jasmin’s favourite memories from SCSA was completing her Year 12 work placement. Working alongside the Event Manager on game day gave her a behind-the-scenes perspective of elite sport that most fans never get to experience.
The experience left such an impression that she continued volunteering in the same role for the next four years, further strengthening her connection to the netball community.
Perhaps the biggest change Jasmin has noticed since leaving SCSA has been the confidence she gained along the way.
“As many people would know, I used to be scared standing up and talking in front of a group of people in general,” she says. “Now it doesn’t scare me so much. I like to think that is the confidence from SCSA that has changed that.”
That confidence has continued to shape the decisions she has made since graduating, including making the brave choice to switch university degrees and pursue teaching.
“I am proud of having the confidence to switch University degrees into teaching, where I can see myself in this position for many years to come.”
Looking ahead, Jasmin hopes to complete her degree, undertake a Master’s in Teaching and secure a teaching position as she begins the next chapter of her career.
Her advice to current SCSA students is simple: it’s okay if your plans change.
“It’s okay to want to pursue different things when you finish school,” she says. “An important thing I learnt at SCSA is that building connections with people is important.”
Whether she’s coaching on the sidelines, supporting the next generation or preparing for a future in the classroom, Jasmin’s journey is a reminder that confidence, connection and being open to change can lead to opportunities you never expected.
