Running for a Cause: West Adelaide’s Tom Latchford Takes on 100km for Mental Health

On Friday, 4 October, Tom Latchford, teacher of our Footy class at West Adelaide Football Club, accomplished an extraordinary feat; running 100 kilometres in a single day to raise awareness and funds for mental health.

What started as a simple conversation between Tom and his mate Luke Charlton about how running helped clear their heads soon turned into something much bigger.

“At the start of the year, Luke and I were just talking about how much better we felt after running – how it made the hard days a little easier,” Tom shared. “Somewhere in that chat, an idea took shape: what if we turned that feeling into something bigger? Something that could help others feel a little less alone in their struggles with mental health.”

That idea became a reality. The pair pushed themselves physically, mentally and emotionally, running 100km while surrounded by an incredible community of supporters who ran alongside them, donated, or simply showed up to cheer them on.

“We felt the power of people coming together for a cause that matters deeply to both of us,” Tom said. “To everyone who donated, ran with us, or showed up to cheer us on – thank you. You have no idea how much your support meant when the legs were heavy and the head started to fade.”

Tom also expressed his gratitude to the Charlton family for their unwavering support, and to The Physio Studio, Podiatry Services SA, The Running Company Adelaide, One Running Apparel, and Unley Run Club for helping make the day possible.

While Tom and Luke’s run raised thousands of dollars for Beyond Blue, Tom’s message goes beyond fundraising: ‘There’s still time to donate, but honestly, if you can’t, just check in with someone close to you. Ask how they’re really going. You never know the difference that might make.’

It’s a simple but powerful reminder, one that speaks directly to what we value at Sports College SA: wellbeing, empathy and supporting one another both on and off the field.

Tom’s effort shows real commitment and resilience, setting a great example for our students. His run was more than just a physical challenge, it highlighted the importance of community, connection and supporting one another.

Tom also mentioned “If this run helped even one person feel seen, it was worth every step.”

We’re proud to have people like Tom inspiring our students, showing that sport has the power to change lives, build connections and start conversations that matter.
