SCSA vs Tjindu – AFL Match Report

The recent AFL clash between SCSA and Tjindu was a fantastic contest and an important fixture that we hope becomes a staple of the Sports College football calendar for years to come. Building and maintaining this partnership is something we value highly, and both teams competed in the right spirit throughout the day.

Coming into the game, the boys were determined to continue closing the gap on previous results. Two years ago, SCSA went down by over 100 points, while last year’s contest was narrowed to just 3–4 goals. This year, the group set out with the goal of finally getting a win against Tjindu.

With a mixed squad of Year 11 and Year 12 students, it took some time early for the team to settle and learn each other’s playing styles, as well as adapt to the brand of football the coaches wanted to implement. Tjindu started strongly and held a three-goal lead at quarter time.

At the main break, SCSA still trailed 37–22, but there was a growing belief among the group that momentum was beginning to shift.

The boys dug deep in the third quarter to work their way back into the contest. Strong marking from Elijah O’Keefe up forward provided an excellent target, while Logan Uren’s ruck work helped give our midfield first use of the football. Will Chambers also stepped into the ruck and impressed with his competitiveness and leap. Despite the lift in intensity, Tjindu still led 58–42 at the final break.

The last quarter was outstanding. The midfield group, led by Tony Marrone, Luca Marrone, Cody Harold and Lachlan Leach, lifted to another level and drove the team forward. The backline stood tall under pressure, with Kruz Duffield leading the defence with a tremendous effort.

Although the game looked out of reach at times, the boys never stopped competing. A series of late goals saw SCSA surge into the lead before holding on bravely to secure a memorable 4-point victory — the school’s first ever win against Tjindu.
